More and more churches are recognising the power of sport to bring people together. Across the country, local churches are using sport to build friendships, strengthen community, and create welcoming spaces where faith can be explored naturally and without pressure.

12 Ways to Connect With Your Community Through Sport

Team Matches

Play friendly matches or tournaments with other churches, community groups, or local teams. End the season with a social event or celebration that brings everyone together. Use sport to build relationships and connect people into wider community life.

Guest Sports Service

Using sport as a shared language, this service creates a welcoming space to explore faith, values, and community in a way that feels natural and accessible. Often linked to major sporting moments and includes a celebration that brings families and supporters together.

Youth Outreach Event

A sports-based event for young people that brings fun, teamwork, and reflection together. Through shared activity and conversation, young people can explore life, values, and faith in an open and respectful way.

Big Screen Event

A relaxed big-screen gathering built around major sporting events. People are welcomed into a comfortable, social space to watch together, connect, and enjoy the atmosphere.

Sports Dinner / Community Breakfast

Shared meals hosted in accessible venues such as the church hall or a local community space. A relaxed way to build relationships and create space for conversation and welcome.

Short Mat Bowls League

An accessible, low-impact activity that encourages friendship, routine, and connection. Indoor or outdoor sessions create a welcoming space for community and conversation.

Family Sports Day

An afternoon of games and activities designed for all ages to take part together. A relaxed, fun way to build connections across families and the wider community.

Sports Quiz

A social quiz night with a sporting theme that brings people together in a relaxed setting. An easy entry point for conversation, laughter, and connection.

Small-Sided Tournament

Host a short-format tournament in a park or community space. Friendly competition, teamwork, and a shared celebration bring people together.

Keep Fit / Movement Class

Run a weekly class for men or women, or a class for mums whilst babies and toddlers are supervised. Follow up the class with a discussion or Bible study.
